40K Terrain Bits and Pieces

While I have not posted much so far this year, there have been plenty of projects underway on the hobby table. The biggest driver has been our group's 40K Urban Conquest campaign. There are 4 of us involved in an 8-stage campaign game that will see us through to the end of July. Getting tables set up for our campaign games has been my primary modelling and painting motivator for the last two months.

Here are some Sector Frontieris ruins.

And crates...so many crates.

Did I mention the crates?

In my latest campaign scenario, I was allowed to bring one fortification. I selected the Imperial Bunker...which I acquired off of Ebay. Painted up very quickly.

This is an Imperial Quad Gun from the Aegis Defence Line set. Managed to glue the guns upside down! Good work, Kevin!

The Quad Gun (without base) also works with the Bunker. Sweet!

Some New 40K Terrain

Today I finished off some more terrain for Kill Team. First up, this building from the Sector Frontiers set.

Very serviceable piece, and a fun model to paint up.

I also did a set of fortifications from the Aegis Defence Line boxed set.

As you can imagine, they painted up very quickly...and they provide plenty of purpose-built Kill Team cover.

Work continues (slowly) on the Blackstone set. Here are the four Spindle Drones from that box.

Yesterday I picked up the Shadowspear set. GW...STOP RELEASING SO MANY COOL NEW MODELS! Anyway, I started building up the new Primaris Marines in that box...such awesome figures.

Burnt-out Rhino

Last month, a friend of mine gave me several boxes of Games Workshop models to distribute into the Edmonton hobby community. One of the models I kept to do myself was this Rhino APC. This is a short step-by-step article on turning it into a burnt-out terrain piece for my Kill Team game boards.

First...build the model.

Second, primed brown. This gets the base rust layer down quite painlessly. After the primer dried, I sponged on some latex.

Next, I sprayed on the base layer of the camouflage colour. When that was dry, I rubbed the whole model to get the latex off and create the first rust chipping layer.

Another latex application, and then sprayed on a couple of camouflage colours. Not shown here, but then gave this layer a rub to expose the base light camo colour through the subsequent camo oversprays.

Next came lots of weathering effects. First, sprayed the model with Glosscoat and got the decals on. Then applied a dark pin wash to pop out all the panel lines. Then started into the mud splatters. These were done in three shades of Vallejo spatter mud colours. After that came rust pigments, dust and dirt. Also painted the tracks with Vallejo track primer and then weathered with AK NATO wash and a steel drybrush. Everything was settled in with pigment fixer and some Dullcoat.

The APC interior was initially primed off-white, and then "burnt-out" with successive layers of soot and rust pigments.

The final layers were done with pigment fixer and AK interactive White Ashes. Also did a final dust pass.

One more Dullcoat pass finished off the whole thing.

And so, the intention was to get a burnt-out vehicle onto my Kill Team boards to act as a flavourful terrain piece.

Mission accomplished!

LVO 40K Friendly Wrap Up

Two weekends ago, I was down in Vegas for my 3rd LVO visit. Once again, loved it. So many great people to meet and play against. And the number of really great-looking armies was incredible. Here's a selection of armies from the 40K Friendly tournament I was playing in.

My tournament ran Saturday and Sunday. Two games each day. First player was Sean Kreger from California. He was playing Genestealer Cult.

First time up against a Goliath truck.

Ewww...150+ rending claw attacks against my Repulsor. Sure, it went down, but I won the game on points, 7-6.

Second game was against Matt Reid. His army was incredible. Almost completely airborne Imperial Guard.

I had a heck of a time trying to shoot down his troop carriers and jets. And while I did get some of them, I wasn't able to kill them fast enough.

My defensive redoubt at the end of the game. This was my only game loss of the weekend.

Sunday morning I played against a great guy from Oklahoma. Wyatt Harris was there with his whole family...all of whom play 40K. Smart, articulate, mature, very clean with his game mechanics and protocols...Wyatt was a great opponent. He played Death Guard.

Two high-firepower elite armies. I got the better of him and won 7-1.

My final opponent for the weekend was Alex Zoukas, a paramedic from Las Vegas. He played Necrons, and I'd have to say that this was the most exciting, and closest game of the weekend. Alex was a great opponent, and we played a very clean game.

My Repulsor and Aggressors ran through his backfield, and were able to deny Alex from scoring points on multiple turns. While he got ahead early on victory points, I was able to fight back and finally take the game 7-4. Go Dark Angels and their Secret Agenda!

There were 80 players in the tournament, and I wound up in 17th place. This was in improvement over my placement last year, and I also took best Dark Angel player.

Very fun tournament, and I will be back in Vegas for this again next year.

Primaris Master and a Pile of Late Christmas Gifts

This past week I needed to submit my army list for the LVO 2019. After putting together a new Dark Angels list, I realized I only needed to paint up one new figure. This is the promotional Primaris Captain figure, repurposed as a Primaris Master.

He fits in nicely with the rest of the army.

So, two weeks ago, I got a message from a hobby friend in the city. He acquired nerve damage from a herniated disk that now prevents him from painting. He has been a big collector of GW products over the years...and a lot of stuff was just sitting in boxes in his basement. Well, he decided to get rid of it, and asked me to distribute everything to players in our local club.

Well, here's what the pile looked like...

And now, the recipients of his generosity!

Thanks to Preston Watamaniuk, for giving these local hobbyists and game players such great post-Christmas presents!

Mummy Princess Bust

First project off the table in 2019 is this Mummy Princess Bust from Black Heart. It's the movie character from last year's disastrous Mummy film with Tom Cruise.

I was looking for a quick change of pace after all the 40K and Shadespire painting I've been doing over the last year.

Nothing too involved here...just some airbrush and brush work. Very straightforward, but a good "pallet cleanser" as we all move into the 2019 hobby season.
