Witch Coven Battle Report...and the Goblin Tinker!

So this month I have a new interview and battle report video blog post...this time with local player, Garnett Germain. Garnett brought out Witch Coven, so we talk about Cryx in general, and then the Witch Coven "Machine Minds" tier list in particular. For the battle report, I put up a Damiano list.

On the painting front, things have been slow recently. However, I have managed to finish off a great little model: the Goblin Tinker.

I really like the character of this figure.

He's essentially a repair bot, but he hauls around this neat little wagon full of spare parts.

He also carries around this wonderful stove on his back.

Anyway, a lot of fun to paint and a nice model to boot.

'Til next time.

12 Points of Spiny Growth

The next army I'm going to work on is a Bart/Galleon list. While I only have three models to finish painting for my Tier 4 Damiano project, I got anxious to dig into Bart's list. To whit...Here are Wrong Eye, Snapjaw and a Bull Snapper. Otherwise known as 12 points of Spiny Growth.

Of the three, I think my favorite model is Snapjaw. He's just so beefy...and plenty of deep detail in the sculpt, which makes painting much, much easier. I built up the cork basing beneath his feet to tip him upwards a little bit.

The simplest model of the three was the Bull Snapper. Nothing special here...a very straightforward paint job. Like with Snapjaw, I airbrushed in a little mottling to vary up the green base color and make it a bit more visually interesting.

I'm not big on the Gatorman-Voodoo theme in Hordes, so Wrong Eye looks a little goofy to my way of thinking. However, the patchwork coat was very fun to paint.

Another view of this solo 'lock.

So here's to Spiny Growth and +2 armor on Galleon. We'll see how that works out in practice.

'Til next time.

Totem Hunter: Step by Step

So, I was so excited to get my paint collection finally squared away, I dove right into painting a figure Monday afternoon.

I started with this Totem Hunter from Hordes. He's a Minion solo...kind of inspired by the Predator, I believe. Assembled, primed and inked.

First I did the skin. I chose an alien purple and added some bronzed flesh tone to the highlight color.

Next I did the gold and blue armor. For the gold, I used some tones of Foundry Burnt Gold. The wash on the base gold color is pretty crucial for the effect, I think. Normally, I'd use GW Chestnut ink, but they don't make it any more. So I made a wash of Liquitex Burnt Sienna ink by adding flow improver and some glaze medium. This worked really well, and I'll keep using it from now on. For the blue, I used three tones of Foundry Bavarian Cornflower Blue. I wet-blended the blue to accentuate the highlights and shadows.

Finally, I added the silver metal, leather and bone colors. The staff is a shade of copper. At this point I added some more flesh tone to the skin because it was looking a little flat.

Here, you can see the paint job on the back of the figure.

The fully painted front.

And finally, here is the figure with the base done. Cork, sand, static grass, etc.

'Til next time.
