Painting is a 4-Letter Word...Episode 2

Here is the audio capture from our December painting night. In it, you'll get the latest opinions on the state of the hobby and gaming community from Mike Sawada, Ward Kapach, Tom Carter, Steven Lind, Barry Gergel, and myself.

Painting is a 4-Letter Word is intended to be listened to while you're working on your own hobby project and want some white noise going on in the background.

Happy New Year!

Painting is a 4-Letter Word

Hello fellow painters and hobby-dudes/dudettes.

I'm announcing the launch of a new video channel series called "Painting is a 4-Letter Word". The videos that will appear in this channel are simply recordings of a monthly get-together of fellow hobby enthusiasts from the Edmonton area. While the participants paint and build tabletop models, conversation naturally drifts from anecdotes, to hobby projects, to thoughts around game companies and entertainment properties. Painting is a 4-Letter Word captures these conversations and opinions and delivers them straight to you.

Why would you care? Well, most of us paint or otherwise hobby in isolation. We have podcasts and music to keep us company...but what about the option of painting within the soundscape of a less-structured geeky conversation? A conversation among enthusiastic and opinionated friends. Well, if the thought of that is appealing...and who couldn't use some more white noise while slogging through long painting projects...well, then hopefully Painting is a 4-Letter Word will work for you.

And, yes...Explicit Language Warning!

In this inaugural episode, you'll hear myself, Tom and Ward from Hobby Night in Canada, Barry from Mekboy's Garage, and good friend, Elliot Christian. Enjoy.

Ice Troll and Yeti...and a Video

I love painting metal miniatures, but I'm not above a good plastic or resin fig when they come along. Gale Force Nine has been putting out a limited series of D&D monsters and adventurer sets for the past couple of years...I thought I'd give some of the figures a try.

First up is this set of winter-themed creatures, the Ice Troll and Yeti. Each is built from about 5 nicely-sculpted resin pieces. Here they are assembled, primed, inked and mounted on new bases.

The paint jobs are super-straightforward.

I airbrushed four shades of light blue and a final overspray of light pink for the Ice Troll...then just brush-painted in the remaining details.

The Yeti got sprays of light grey through white, was given a dark wash, and over-sprayed again.

Again, remaining details were brush-painted in the finish the figure.

I like these figures. Great animation, and simple to paint up.

And they got a workout in our latest D&D session. Here is an edited video of the last battle in the D&D Basic Set campaign, the Lost Mine of Phandelver. Thanks to David, Mike, Garnett, Kimberley, Elliot and Seana for playing in this one.

Video Tutorial: Painting Reaper's Dire Bear

This week I painted up a Dire Bear from Reaper Miniatures. Great sculpt, nice clean casting...and easy to paint up.

Here is a quick painting tutorial for this miniature...

I picked a couple of Grizzly images from a Google search to use as source material for the project.

This picture was particularly helpful.

And the end result is a nice figure...happy with the way this one turned out.

Video Tutorial: Painting the Green Dragon

This is a video tutorial of the steps used to paint the Reaper Young Forest Dragon I finished off this weekend.

The figure is small, but nicely detailed. I was satisfied with the end result.

Enjoy.

Warmachine Battle Report: Focus on Kromac

Last week, I had local Warmachine player, Josh Richter, over for a game. He brought his favorite Circle army, while I played some of my new Mercenaries. Here is the pre-game interview with Josh, along with the battle report.

I brought out my Bart/Galleon list, which, of course, featured Galleon.

Here was my Spiny Growth module. Wrong Eye, Snapjaw and Bullsnapper.

And a tarpit of Boomhowlers.

This was my armour de-buff crew: Ragman, the Lady and Holt.

Finally, this was the core of the Galleon's support crew, including a Vanguard, Dougal and the Tinker.

Josh led with Kromac's double-Stalker battlegroup.

Two units of Woldstalkers.

And two units of stones.

Hope you enjoy the battle report.

Starting a Video Blog

I've been wanting to add a video element to this blog for some time. I finally got around to buying a camcorder, along with the bells and whistles to make video reports.

My introductory video is here:

And the second episode, which focuses on Warmachine, Khador, Vlad2 and a battle report, is here:

Hope you like these. Please provide any feedback so that I can make future videos that are more in line with what you may be looking for.
