Off For A While

Dear guys and gals,

Well, after posting on the hobby table just about every week for over 2 years, it's time to take a break. I'll be back again in the second half of June with a step-by-step article on weathering metal armor and weapons...without powder.

In the mean time, Jupiter and Orion will be holding down the fort. Have a great spring, and I hope your hobby projects turn out great.

Thralls and the Wraith Witch

It's springtime in Edmonton...so, of course it's snowing like crazy. Good time to blog.

This week I finished off that full unit of 10 Bane Thralls I started up last week. When I compare them to the old model Bane Thralls, there's really nothing to recommend this new set. I like the old sculpts better...particularly the heads and cloth of the old models.

I've fought against Epic Denny twice up at Thunderground this year and have gone 1-1 against her. However, I can see that she is a super-strong warcaster. So I built my own, and now she's part of the collection.

This and That

I was down in Austin this week...so not so much hobby time. However, I did start up another unit of Bane Thralls. These models are from the new Bane Thrall unit box, and have the updated resin shoulder pads. Whoop-dee-do. They took longer to clean up than the old metal models, and I don't think they look any better. Why replace the old SKU? Who knows.

Here they are with primer and some overspray. Didn't get any further than this, though. Hopefully, I'll have them finished up this week.

Finally, one last set of finished units. These are Necrotechs and Scrap Thralls. I use a couple of these pieces in my Mortenebra list.

Two Custom Slayers and a Reaper

More Cryx Helljack kits. Need them for my 50-point Mortenebra tier list. So...how to make your 5th and 6th Slayers a little different from the others in your collection...

In this photo, the two new Slayers flank the Reaper model in the center. These are assembled, and as you can see, I've added on some customizations to keep things fresh. The Slayer on the left gets some Texas longhorns, and I glued skulls over the fist spikes. I also removed one of his tusks and drilled a hole where the tusk was lost. The one on the right also got a pair of Stegadon horns (or at least that's what I think they are), and some model razor wire wrapped around his hands. His head was swapped for a Menoth Templar head (oh, those Cryx just don't care where their parts come from!). The Reaper is stock.

OK, no the models have been primed and sprayed a few shades of grey-green. You might be able to see that I also put a few bits into the bases for more visual interest.

And there they are finished up. Used the rust and dust again to stay in theme with the rest of my Cryx forces. The more you do this, the faster it goes.

I got the idea for the skulls on the fist spikes from the Deathjack artwork and model.

The razor wire on this slayer came from Army Painter.

My first Reaper.

So, I played the Morenebra tier list at the local steamroller tournament yesterday and went 2-1 for 6th place. My one loss was against another Cryx army...and honestly, I would have been much better of switching over to my alternate eSkarre list. This Mortenebra list does best against lists with living models...the eDenny list I faced was all undead/incorporeal. Anyway, it was a fun day and it was good to see the familiar tourney faces up at Thunderground. Thanks to Roy Kim for putting on another fine event.

SR 2012 Objectives (WIP Part 2)

The Warmachine Steamroller objective and flag project continues. This week was pretty good. Finished off 7 pieces.

Here are, from left to right, the Explosives Cache, Fuel Cache and Restoration Cache objectives. These were simply resin molds from Privateer that just needed to be painted up. I primed in black, which left them with an overall dark tone. I should have used white and finished them up brighter...oh well.

And here is the completed flag set. The rocky cairns were build up with cork, and the flags were donated by a group of Easterling infantry from Middle-earth. Well done, fellows...there's hope for you yet.

There's a Steamroller tournament up in St. Albert next Saturday, and I still need to make a couple of models for my list, so that will likely occupy most of this week.

Steamroller 2012 Objectives and Flags (WIP Part 1)

OK, no surprise...I'm a Warmachine junkie. Over the past 7 weeks I've played nearly 30 games. Most of these have been scenarios from the Steamroller 2012 tournament rules. Now, these scenarios use a lot of zones, objectives and flags. Zones are easy enough to mark with paper on the game table. However, given the visual nature of the game, I'm surprised there hasn't been much hubbub about player desire to see the objectives and flags modelled. While Privateer Press has release resin molds of three of their scenario objective types, there are plenty more that need attention.

Sounds like a project.

So, I started with the Monolith objectives. You need two of them on 50mm bases. I took mine from my GW Hill of Skulls set. Visually, these guys are pretty plain, so I tried to spruce them up with some light and dark blue splatters and embellished the cracks with some extra paint work.

The rest of the objective models and flags are works in progress. Should finish them over the coming weeks.

These are the Guidon Bearers. I used mercenary 'jack Talon models. Their spear tips were clipped off and Reaper fantasy banners were pinned on. Just have base colors down on the 'jacks right now.

For the Artillery Emplacements, I'm just using Khador mortar models. Primed and inked at this point.

These are the Privateer Press models of the Fuel Cache, Explosives Cache and Restoration Cache objectives. I have them about 75% painted at this point.

Finally, the Steamroller 2012 scenarios require that you have four flags on 40mm bases. Instead of glueing a simple flag pole in some flat terrain, I decided to build up some rocky cairns and stick a small flag in the top of each. All that's left to do on these is get the flags painted...so that should go pretty fast at this point.
